2024-10-14

Mr. Sidi Mohamed Ould Rachid, President of the Chamber of Councillors, received Mr. Rodrigo Otavio Soares Pacheco, President of the Federal Senate of the Federative Republic of Brazil, at the Council’s headquarters on Monday, October 14, 2024.

At the beginning of this meeting, the President of the Chamber of Councillors praised Mr. Rodrigo Otavio Soares Pacheco’s important visit to the Kingdom of Morocco, emphasizing that it will contribute to strengthening the distinguished path of cooperation between the Moroccan Chamber of Councillors and its Brazilian counterpart.

In this context, the President of the Chamber of Councillors stressed that the parliamentary relations between the two councils fall within the framework of the dynamic bilateral relations between the two friendly countries, which gained real momentum thanks to the historic visit of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to several Latin American countries, including Brazil, in 2004, followed by bilateral agreements covering various political, economic, and cultural fields.

On this occasion, the President of the Chamber of Councillors recalled the pioneering Atlantic African initiative launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, aiming to create a solid institutional framework that unites the 23 African countries bordering the Atlantic Ocean, making Morocco's Atlantic front a starting point to strengthen logistical connections among the countries of the Afro-Latin American geo-economic space.

Regarding parliamentary diplomacy, he highlighted the steadfast awareness of the importance of parliamentary cooperation in strengthening and consolidating relations between the two friendly countries and expressed a desire to develop this cooperation, as outlined in the memorandum of understanding signed between the two councils in 2018. This agreement calls for establishing permanent channels of Moroccan-Brazilian parliamentary dialogue to promote exchanges of visits, experiences, and expertise across various areas of parliamentary work.

Regarding the issue of the Kingdom of Morocco’s territorial integrity, the President of the Chamber of Councillors praised the firm and supportive stance of the Federative Republic of Brazil, recalling and commending in this regard the Brazilian Senate’s vote in favor of a motion supporting the autonomy plan for Morocco's southern provinces, as part of Morocco’s serious and credible efforts to find a final solution to this artificial conflict.

For his part, Mr. Rodrigo Otavio Soares Pacheco, President of the Brazilian Federal Senate, expressed his appreciation for the quality and depth of relations between the Federative Republic of Brazil and the Kingdom of Morocco at all political, economic, and cultural levels, highlighting joint cooperation files, especially economic, trade, agricultural relations, and issues related to climate change.

The President of the Brazilian Federal Senate also emphasized the role of parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening strategic relations between Morocco and Brazil, stressing the need to boost economic and trade cooperation between the two countries and to harness their vast potential, adding that geographical distance is no longer an obstacle to this endeavor.

Mr. Rodrigo Otavio Soares Pacheco further underscored Brazil's high regard for the royal Atlantic initiative, which cements Morocco's role as a gateway to the African continent.

At the conclusion of this meeting, the President of the Brazilian Federal Senate extended an invitation to Mr. Sidi Mohamed Ould Rachid, President of the Chamber of Councillors, to undertake a parliamentary visit to the Federative Republic of Brazil, providing an opportunity to explore bilateral and multilateral parliamentary cooperation prospects and to consult and coordinate on various topics of common interest.
