Rabat - Cooperation relations between Morocco and Ireland were at the center of discussions on Wednesday in Rabat between the President of the House of Councilors, Enaam Mayara, and the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee of the Parliament of the Republic of Ireland, Charles Flanagan.

During this meeting, Mr. Mayara and Mr. Flanagan reviewed aspects of the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries, based on common values and mutual respect.

In this regard, the President of the House of Councilors praised the quality of the political relations between the two countries, highlighting the Kingdom's commitment to further elevate them in various fields, particularly in the economic and commercial sectors.

Regarding the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, Mr. Mayara praised Ireland's position supporting the resolutions of the Security Council and a peaceful solution to this artificial conflict, noting that he also informed the Irish delegation of the various aspects of economic and social development in the southern provinces, unlike the disastrous situation endured by the captives in the Tindouf camps, on Algerian soil.

Furthermore, the President of the House of Councilors renewed his thanks to Ireland, government, parliament, and people, for their support to Morocco following the earthquake in Al Haouz.

At the same time, Mr. Mayara provided an overview of the composition and prerogatives of the House of Councilors, which, he said, pays particular attention to the development of relations between the legislative institutions of Morocco and Ireland.

In this context, he emphasized the importance of parliamentary cooperation as a driving force for promoting bilateral cooperation in the service of issues of common interest.

On his part, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee of the Parliament of the Republic of Ireland expressed his satisfaction with the strength of the political relations between the two friendly countries, considering that his country's decision to appoint a new ambassador to Rabat for the first time about two years ago "illustrates its willingness to strengthen Moroccan-Irish cooperation and elevate it to a better level".

Mr. Flanagan emphasized the role of parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening this dynamic, expressing the hope that the planned visit of the President of the Irish Senate to Morocco will pave the way for fruitful cooperation between the two countries in all areas.

Furthermore, the Irish official considered Morocco as Ireland's gateway to the African continent, emphasizing that he followed with interest the recent Royal Speech delivered on the occasion of the 48th anniversary of the Green March. In this context, he expressed "his country's readiness to join the partnership announced between Morocco and the Mediterranean and Atlantic shores".

The two parties agreed to intensify visits between parliamentarians from both countries and to share views on many bilateral, regional, and international parliamentary issues of interest.
